What is meniscal tear? Symptoms, how to treat it conventionally, Regenerative - PRP/ cell treatment

Partial Meniscus Tears Heals Without Surgery – Don’t Let It Tear Completely!

It is always a delight to watch the athletes on the sports ground. Their athletic activities will always create the WOW factor among the audience. The sportsmen are so flexible that they jump, sprint, and dunk with such ease. But one wrong move while making those twirls and twists can injure you. While some athletes, mostly those who play contact sports, are at a higher risk of having meniscus tears. Meniscal tear is one of the most common causes of knee pain. And anyone can suffer from the meniscal damage regardless of age or activity.

The injury initially may not appear severe, and you would be able to walk and run with not much discomfort. But later, depending on the severity of the injury, the knee pain can be moderate to severe. If left untreated knee pain may limit your routine activities. Moreover, untreated meniscus partial tear may cause other major knee issues.

Early diagnosis, early relief

The knee joint is one of the largest and complex joints in the human body. The knee joint is a type of hinge joint with a limited range of movement and one of the most important joints of our body. Apart from the bones (femur, tibia, fibula, and patella), the tendons and ligaments play an essential role in forming the knee joint. The tendon connects the knee bones with the muscles. Ligaments join the bones of the knee joint together and provide stability to the knee.

The menisci or semilunar fibrocartilages are two crescentic or C-shaped lamellae. The menisci mainly serve to deepen the surfaces of the head of the tibia for articulation. These intraarticular fibrocartilages act as a cushion and stabilizes the joint. Any tear in the meniscus is very painful and sometimes debilitating too.

Have you been experiencing knee pain for a while now? We understand that knee pain can be distressing and can hinder your ability to perform independently. Knee pain is common among people of all age groups. Early examination of knee pain is essential to avoid further complications, especially in the cases of a meniscus tear. If left untreated, it can cause severe consequences. The meniscus tear can be either partial or complete. The pain can be distressing, and you start looking for options to get rid of the intractable pain.

Meniscus tear is a painful condition, and its symptoms include:

    • Painful joints where the pain gets aggravated by pressure
    • Swelling and stiffness of the knee joint
    • Difficulty in bending and straightening the knees
    • Locked knee
    • Popping sensation when the meniscus dislodges

The pain in the initial days of the injury is usually mild. But with time, the intensity of pain increases gradually and becomes severe.

Conventionally, the meniscus tear is taken care of by following the R.I.C.E. routine, sometimes along with pain management therapy. The R.I.C.E. routine includes:

    • Rest: Provide adequate rest to the affected knee.
    • Ice: Apply ice wrapped by a cloth on the affected knee at regular intervals.
    • Compression: Apply pressure by tying a bandage around the affected knee to reduce inflammation.
    • Elevation: Elevate the affected knee to avoid swelling.

If there is no relief from pain by following the R.I.C.E. routine, the doctors conventionally recommend consuming non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs for a shorter duration only.

Your doctors may also recommend the administration of corticosteroid injections. But it provides relief only for a shorter period.

In a few cases, the doctors suggest surgery as an alternative, if conventional methods do not reduce the pain or the meniscus tear is more severe.

Surgical treatment always ends up with an extensive rehabilitation period and significant complications. Hence before finalizing the surgical procedure, it is always better to opt for an alternate non-surgical method namely Regenerative Medicine, which utilizes your body’s cells to regenerate, heal or regrow the repaired tissues naturally and quickly.

The meniscus acts as a shock absorber to the knee and if damaged, can cause pain in the knee. Hence its partial tear, especially in the area where there is good blood supply, it reacts very well to regenerative treatments.

Some of the benefits of PRP injections include:

    • Reduce the need for anti-inflammatories or stronger medications that comprise of steroids.
    • Platelet Rich Plasma therapy is a minimally invasive, non-surgical same-day procedure with minimal recovery time.
    • No general anaesthesia is required, and mostly there is no need to take any post-operative pain medication. You are awake during the procedure and ready to go home soon after the injection into the affected area.
    • There is no risk of rejection or cross-transmission of disease, as the PRP injections contain biologic material harvested from your body.

To determine if you are a qualified candidate and will benefit the most from PRP treatment, you need to schedule an appointment with our Clinic. Our Consultant will review your medical records, examine your condition, and determine if you are a suitable candidate for regenerative treatments.

The choice of the treatment is at the discretion of the Consultant, depending on the individual case. In some instances, it may be a combination of more than one treatment protocol. The options of Regenerative Medicine other than PRP therapy include Prolotherapy, Stromal vascular fraction therapy and Mesenchymal cell therapy.

Before going ahead with the treatment do disclose the medications that you are taking with the Consultant, as some medicine hampers the efficacy of PRP injection.

So, do not let the partial meniscus tear completely when natural healing is possible non-surgically using regenerative therapy.

Regenerative Therapy for Knee Pain may help patients who don’t respond to typical drug treatment, want to reduce their reliance on medication, or are looking for safe knee replacement alternatives. Regenerative Treatments are not suitable for all conditions and all patients. The consultant will be able to advise if you are a suitable candidate.

Your first step to exploring your treatment options for knee pain is scheduling a consultation with our Consultant. To do so call us on 020 8168 2000 or alternatively book a consultation online or request a call back today!
